Spanish artist-designer Jaime Hayon created a series of three art installations for Southmead Hospital in Bristol, England. Proposed as part of a project to enhance the hospital’s environment, the installations are designed to provide a more welcoming space for patients and visitors.
The installations feature a total of fifteen sculptures, with a group of five placed in each of the hospital’s three courtyards. Crafted from glass-reinforced plastic (GRP), the sculptures are based on the anthropomorphic forms Hayon has explored in his previous work.
Varying in height from 4m to 7.5m, these unique, spherical figures appear to call out to one another from tall, ladder-like tripod plinths.
Each courtyard’s sculptures are finished in a different color, which not only distinguishes the spaces but also serves as a key part of the hospital’s wayfinding scheme. These striking installations are visible from numerous vantage points throughout the new and historic Brunel buildings.
