Atelier Wonderland
Jaime Hayon presents Atelier Wonderland, a solo exhibition at Galerie kreo in Paris that will unveil an original collection of 15 pieces, transcending the traditional boundaries of art and design. Taking over the entire gallery space, the exhibition translates his ebullient visual vocabulary across various mediums and signals a pivotal moment in his oeuvre. This exhibition illustrates Hayon’s dedication to exceptional craftsmanship, using traditional artisan techniques to produce colorful, contemporary pieces that translate his distinctive visual vocabulary onto different collectible objects.
Atelier Wonderland includes bold Mediterranean-inspired vases and lamps, examples of Hayon’s experiments with monochromatic finishes. By using a mix of glaze and alcohol on his ceramics, Hayon achieves a texture reminiscent of oil paintings, giving each piece a distinct appearance. These hand-painted pieces are evocative of Hayon’s singular cosmos, where faces, abstract shapes, and celestial bodies interact. Each piece, meticulously handcrafted and painted, aligns with Hayon’s approach to creativity, bridging diverse mediums in a relentless exploration of form and narrative.
The exhibition also features a series of handcrafted walnut wood tables and Murano mirrors. Hayon’s has worked in intimate collaboration with Venetian craftsmen in the creation of these mirrors adorned with his iconic animal figures, being involved in every step of the process, from the traditional blowing, to the artisanal engraving with a diamond wheel and the hand assembly. The delicate woodwork and marble inlay pieces on his Organism tables further highlight his fluency across diverse mediums, shaping high-quality natural woods into elegantly simple yet complex forms.
Four large-scale paintings that crystallise Hayon’s intertextual approach will be unveiled in this exhibition, where the canvas becomes a site of convergence for sculptural concepts and a lexicon of personal iconography. This narrative complexity, articulated through a synthesis of humanised animals, emotive landscapes, and symbolic staircases, offers a reflection on the multifaceted nature of perception and reality. These paintings, alongside the new design collection exhibited, articulate a journey through Hayon’s imaginative landscape, in a vibrant celebration of artistic intuition.
Atelier Wonderland invites to a renewed understanding of Hayon’s work, characterized by a strong rigor and a deep engagement with artisanal heritage, and reaffirms the significance of the artist’s hand in contemporary art and design.
