Maison Matisse Limited Collection

One of the things I admire most about Matisse’s work is the use of colour: it is so well-integrated, so special, and applied in a magical way. It reflects the traces of different cultures and the rich and dynamic journey of a unique life, at the same time. His line is a combination of precision and figuration. By studying his paintings, one can find a rich mix of elements, notably his representation of nature combined with imaginative furniture and objects from cultures that are important to him.

Henri Matisse uses solid figures; the colour contrast is magnificent. The most important point that I feel I share with Matisse is a passion for the Mediterranean: nature, the sea, the imagination and the ability to dream. The choice of blues and oranges reminds me of medinas, orange blossoms and markets of North Africa. Codes like these transports me to a Mediterranean loaded with power and magic.

I am a fervent admirer of his style and I have always found a real source of inspiration in it. Having the opportunity to transpose the inspiration I find in his work into my personal universe has been very enriching. The concept behind these vases is based on fantastical elements: forms, silhouettes and natural references that float in a sea of colours.

The shape of the vase itself is inspired by Mediterranean references and the elements that appear in Matisse’s oeuvre. Tradition and audacity come together to create unique and defined exterior lines that confer strength and character to the style and concept of the design.

Afrikando

This set of seven glass vessels is on view for the first time in the exhibition of work by Spanish artist-designer Jaime Hayon. Expressly designed for the Milwaukee Art Museum’s permanent Collection, Afrikando fuses the tradition of glassblowing with the designer’s delightfully fresh contemporary sensibility.

Hayon envisioned this work as a “family” of figures. Though the individual vases are unique, each shares qualities with the others, some more than others.

Afrikando also serves as a fascinating study in light and color. A mixture of translucent and opaque glass produces intriguing effects, as does the visual layering of stems, funnels, and attached decorations inside and around the vessels’ bodies. The various components that make up each piece are not fixed together. Instead, funnels balance delicately on the vessels’ mouths, and the red staffs that adorn Malawa (Blossoms) are held in place by two small openings in the vase.

As the title Afrikando suggests, the collection is inspired, in part, by the decorative arts of Africa. Hayon was inspired by collections of African masks and costumes that he has seen in museums around the world. This is evident in some of the vessels’ mask-like features. These, when observed closely, lend a somewhat more somber quality to the bright and cheerful figures. With Afrikando, Hayon directly acknowledges the debt that modern Western aesthetics owe to African cultures, while also celebrating the cultural fusion that has resulted from the realities of globalism.

Afrikando demonstrate how globalism can manifest not only in aesthetic forms, but also though mediums and traditions of making. The glass studio that produced the work is part of a long and storied tradition of glassblowing on the island of Murano, off the coast of Venice, Italy.  The basic forms were shaped by blowing glass into molds, these were refined with additional “gobs” of molten glass, and then decorated by etching once cooled.

Silhouette for Nani Marquina

Silhouette is a collection of rugs designed by Jaime Hayon for indoor and outdoor use that highlights the acclaimed casual style of the artist.

Depicted with a delicate stroke, the illustration defines the silhouettes of several imaginary characters that intertwine and coexist in a beautiful composition. Hayón subtly introduces color through small elements brimming with personality that help to interpret each of the images. Nine faces are distributed at different angles so that the rug can be viewed from any perspective, fitting perfectly in any space.

The outdoor proposal is an outdoor hand-tufted rug, developed with 100% recycled PET fiber and produced in India. This combination provides great utility while transferring a sense of well-being that is needed for outdoor spaces.
