Palette Tables for &Tradition

Recalling inspiration from Alexander Calder’s kinetic sculptures, Spanish artist / designer Jaime Hayon creates a harmonious composite of disparate sizes, shapes, colours and materials which elegantly come together in a cohesive design.

“I’ve been fascinated by Alexander Calder for ages,” admits Hayon. “He was the originator of the mobile. While everyone was drawing on paper, Calder transformed abstract drawings into 3D linear sculptures. With the Hayon Lounge Tables, you get a similar sense of equilibrium from any angle. A feeling of motion in a static object, merging the elegance of marble with the strength of metal and the lightness of wood.”

Each table beautifully balances different shapes at varying heights which form a unified whole. Featuring a painter’s palette shape, a circle, a rounded rectangle, an elongated oval and a hexagon. Hayon expertly orchestrates each collage of sizes and shapes.

Adding even more appeal is a compelling mix of materials. Including marble, such as polished Nero Marquina, Rosso Levanto and honed Bianco Carrara. Ash veneer makes its way in stained dark grey, blue or pale pink. Meanwhile steel as the armature keeping these diverse shapes affixed – almost in suspended animation.

As &tradition’s Brand Director Martin Kornbek Hansen sees it, “I love Hayon’s uncanny ability to mix and mismatch every design parameter into one holistic table that would welcome any coffee cup or cosy conversation. Achieved with Hayon’s typical, playful approach to practicality – with plenty of personality.

BD Showtime Collection 10th Anniversary

When we presented the Showtime Collection back in 2006, Jaime Hayon was a unique emerging, most intriguing young character in new Spanish design. Today, he’s a consecrated author with prestige on an international scale. His designs for BD have reaped continual success due to the personality, quality, elegance, yet amusing designs, having just the right touch of romanticism and the versatility to adapt to home as well as contract. All of this is Showtime, a collection that reflects classicism and modernity – a contrast that has always been the very essence of our company. For us this has been a complete ‘ten out of ten’ project and now reaches its 10th anniversary, celebrated with new colours, lacquers and upholstery for the poltronas; more glossy lacquers and luxurious marbles for the Multi Legged cabinet and low tables; special vase finishes with gold details; and two new mirrors, King and Kong which carry Hayon’s distinct hallmark.

Tiovivo: Whimsical Sculptures by Jaime Hayon

Tiovivo: Whimsical Sculptures by Jaime Hayon is the third in a series of large-scale interactive installations on the Carroll Slater Sifly Piazza. Hayon created a site-specific work that features four wooden sculptures in the familiar shapes of animals or objects, such as a pig or a bell, that inspire playfulness and joy. Each whimsical structure features a colourful pattern, ranging from polka dots to stripes, and sets of stairs and slides with openings specifically sized for children that encourage guests to interact with the sculptures.

Tiovivo continues an innovative multiyear initiative to animate the piazza by engaging visitors in art. This installation transforms the space into an outdoor art gallery, playground, and refuge, creating an atmosphere for socialising and recreation. Tiovivo is also a stage for performances, art-making activities, and special events co-organised with local partner institutions.

The installation builds on the success of the 2014 and 2015 commissions Mi Casa, Your Casa and Los Trompos (The Spinning Tops) by Mexican designers Héctor Esrawe and Ignacio Cadena. Originally planned as a two-year project, the piazza activation program has been extended through 2017 thanks to funding from the Lettie Pate Evans Foundation through a grant to The Woodruff Arts Center.

Objects for Fritz Hansen

 Objects – complementing your life

Objects is the name of the new accessories line created by Republic of Fritz Hansen. It consists of twelve beautiful items for your home designed by Danish and international designers, among them the design duo Studio Roso, Wednesday architecture and Jaime Hayon. Objects is a unique collection of design items that reflects our passion for good design with a purpose. Like our furniture, Objects is a statement that can add a touch of Nordic lifestyle and playfulness to your home. Objects will never dominate but simply complement your space.

Genuine Objects

Objects are made from genuine materials, reflecting Fritz Hansen’s proud heritage of high quality and exquisite craftsmanship. The collection exudes beauty and simplicity in an array of subdued tones such as sand, earth and stone. One look at the collection, and you can’t help but feel captivated by the appealing designs and the natural touch and feel.

Each of the items in the Objects collection has a story of its own. The mirror is not really a mirror. The vase is designed to pay tribute to the whole flower, not just the head. The beautiful Shaker-inspired trays are crafted with exactly the same materials and attention to detail as the Ant chair and the Series 7 chair.

‘Creating Objects, we looked back into our rich heritage, and we also reached out to Danish and international contemporary designers in order to continue our history. This has resulted in a family of items that can make you stop and think – and hopefully capture your fascination. They are all items that will contribute to the ambiance of your home by their mere presence alone. The collection begins with twelve objects but will develop over time, as new items for the home will be added to the accessories line,’ says Christoffer Back, Director, Fritz Hansen Objects.

The elements in the Objects series offer more than an alluring appearance. They have an uncanny way of engaging your senses. Design aficionados will instantly feel drawn to the dynamic lines of the designs combined with the tactile sensations of the authentic materials. For example, when you inhale the soothing scent of cedar wood and touch the surface, the experience will, in turn, touch you.

Studio and Discovery Space at the Groninger Museum

Who else but Jaime Hayon would think of creating a studio design based on a jungle? And who else would incorporate an accident, with someone knocking over one of his vases, in the decoration of a new vase? Jaime Hayon is the Spanish top designer who created the Info Center in 2010. In 2015, he developed a total package containing the versatile studio and the discovery space as well as room for creativity, curiosity and the electronic quest for information about the collection and the building.

The discovery space is bursting with cabinets and drawers to browse through. You can even work with artefacts yourself. Touch a real work of art, for instance, playing ‘Prohibited NOT to Touch’; play ‘Flexible like an Artist’ and make your own work of art, or play ‘Style Stacking‘ to discover all kinds of stylistic differences between painters.

The design of the studio features referrals to the jungle. You will recognize mask-like motifs and a large work bench that looks like a snake. This is the place to be creative and to explore all kinds of materials.
During the week, the studio is available to school groups. On Saturdays and Sundays, workshops (from 12 to 5 p.m.) are open to all creative visitors, who will be welcomed and, if necessary, assisted by teachers associated with the museum. Workshops are also organized during school holidays.
In addition, the studio is used for special receptions, presentations, lectures and small-scale performances.

The 2015 extension of the Info Center was made possible by the bequest Quirijn and Ina de Marees van Swinderen-de Blocq van Scheltinga.
