Chromatico

Following the first solo exhibition, Game On, at Galerie kreo in 2015, ChromaticO by Jaime Hayon, explores precious materials and colours, a joyful celebration of life. A quest for freedom and playfulness. It seems effortless, spontaneous, even easy.

“No one would imagine how much thought is given to each piece, how much dexterity is needed to create them. All the freshness that is present in his drawings, the first step of his creative process, is preserved until the final pieces. How he achieves this is a bit of a mystery. Especially since we learn about his meticulous attention to detail, his endless discussions with the craftsmen, the extensive research for making things in new and unexpected ways, the aim for perfection in execution. His new collection for Galerie kreo is titled “Chromatico” and, as always in his work method, it is based on exploration, this time for both colour and materials, with special attention at the ability of color to transform an object, to become essential for its identity. There are two main subjects in this body of work, each focused on a different noble material.”

“He is interested in the colorful side of Africa, its crafts, its textures… and he adds his personal playful touch to these delicate works. The contrast between the strong power of the African world and the use of glass as a material – a liquid way of working that adds flexibility and freedom – results in a range of pieces full of joy and sophistication. He has used a mix of strong colors like golden reds, greens or oranges with very subdued ones in contrast. The bases instead are made in precious marbles of delightful tones like Rosa Portogallo or Giallo Siena that complete the works and give them physical and emotional stability.”

Palette Desk for & Tradition

Spanish artist / designer Jaime Hayon brings a suspended sense of animation to a new series of desks which partner two different shapes together in a mix of materials. The result is a freeze frame of motion in a double level design reminiscent of Alexander Calder’s kinetic sculptures.

“Calder transformed a 2D object into an enthralling 3D kinetic experience” says Hayon. “At first his mobiles appear flat, until the slightest breeze rushes in , breathing life into these simple geometric shapes. When I first saw them   I was almost mesmerised. My Palette Desk is an homage to this supremely simple concept of poetry in motion. As I see it, a desk is where we are supposed to sit still and make decisions. And yet, it is also where we find distractions. For the Palette Desk, I merged two different sized shapes  in contrasting materials to hopefully bring a cohesive sense of order out of chaos.”

An elongated bean shape and a small round shape are the two differ-ent elements appearing in various colours and materials which converge together to create a brilliant balancing act, secured by a metal armature. For the table tops look for an elegant choice between either honed Bianco Carrara marble, Nero Marquina marble, or satin polished brass. Adding earthiness is the option of stained ash veneer in red, grey-green or black. Adding a contemporary touch is powder coated steel tubes as the base. It’s this contrast from coupling diverse colours and materials that creates cohesion. For Martin Kornbek Hansen, &tradition’s Brand Director, “Hayon adds a Spanish accent to our Scandinavian sensibility. With the Palette Desk, he creates a new design lingo by fusing different shapes and materials into a hybrid that is harmonious and holistic.”

Sammen for Fritz Hansen

Sammen is the new soft and comfortable dining chair, which is designed by Jaime Hayon. The design is straightforward, open and friendly and has therefore been named Sammen, which is Danish for being together. That is exactly what this design does, as Sammen is designed for a pleasant evening in the company of good friends and family. An evening at the dinner table with good food, good conversations and many treasured moments.

Sammen is instantly likable because it is an honest, modern and simple chair – a comfortable seat that makes you feel relaxed and free to share your thoughts with everyone around the dinner table. This is where we eat, meet, work and discuss life’s events, big and small, spending hours of quality time. Sammen puts you in the right frame of mind – relaxed, at ease and ready to take part in these shared moments. The warm look of the wooden legs and the soft, padded shell that embraces you makes Sammen™ a perfect choice for making your dining room feel like your living room.

Fri for Fritz Hansen

Fri™ is the new armchair by Jaime Hayon. It is a natural extension of Ro™. While Ro™ offers a calm and sheltered space for relaxation and reflection, however, Fri™ encourages you to be part of the environment and join in. Fri™ is all about the life that is going on around you.

Fri™ is designed to create a cosy feel in any setting. Of course, it takes more than a chair to create that ambience, but Fri™ is a first step towards bringing this exceptional atmosphere into your life, as Fri™ is designed to put you in the mood for connecting with others and to contribute a pleasant and open atmosphere. Fri™ creates a space where you can feel relaxed and comfortable without feeling withdrawn or unapproachable. Where you can spend quality time and take part in the meaningful moments of everyday life at home, at the office or in a restaurant.

Milà Chair for Magis

Imagine you’re able to do in plastic what is impossible to do in wood. With the expertise of Magis as pioneers in gas injection-moulding, we were able to make an expressive chair very rich in movement, based on the forms of Catalan modernism: elastic and dynamic. We created a truly elegant plastic chair, something to stand out on a saturated market. It’s a challenge for me, as someone who normally uses materials with thousands of years of heritage such as wood, metal, and ceramic, to create my first product in plastic. And I am happy with it. Jaime Hayon.

Materico for Toyo

MATERICO by Jaime Hayon for TOYO manifests a powerful vision: that through joy and elegance, the bathroom can be elevated to the same level of importance as the living room. Hayon brings his characterful design and the idea of elegance to the bathroom, with the same attention to craft and emotion as he applies to lounge chairs and sofas. “A hundred years ago, the bathroom was as important as other rooms in the home – the Victorian era and even the age of Art Deco,” says Hayon, “but in the last few decades, we’ve lost that spirit in favor of clinical, asceptic spaces.”

Bathroom design has a special place in the practice of Jaime Hayon. After all, it was 10 years ago that Hayon launched his career with a collection so surprisingly elegant for bathroom, it was exhibited at the London Design Museum. Today in collaboration with TOYO, Hayon brings 10 years of further development to bear in a new bathroom collection, through noble materials such as marble, wood, and of course stainless steel, TOYO’s area of expertise. Hayon concludes, “MATERICO brings glamour – together with function – back to bathrooms.”

Vico Sofa for Cassina

For the Salone del Mobile 2014, Cassina and Jaime Hayon launch Vico: a new two and three-seater sofa and armchair, named after Hayon’s son as a special tribute. The project takes on a natural approach which unearths our innate desire to nest, to curl up in an organic shape and relax, without sacrificing the contemporary form, structure, and comfort which characterises Italian design.

Hayon, always concerned with the production of finely crafted objects, thoroughly researched the heritage of Italian design and, by studying Cassina’s archives in particular from the 1950’s and 60’s, pinpointed several distinctive elements regarding the sofa to develop into a contemporary context. The result is surprising; the fluidity and sinuosity of the design, personalized with Hayon’s own characteristic style, has been interpreted through a typical Cassina filter, making the piece more essential and less decorative than many of his previous projects.

Analog for Fritz Hansen

Jaime Hayon has designed Analog for Republic of Fritz Hansen. The table is celebrating the authentic way of connecting with people around a table by bringing us closer. The world is filled with communication through digital devices. Analog provides a space where no device is needed. The table promotes a return to the genuine togetherness that is a stark contrast to the digital life we face with demands of constant on-line presence. Analog gives you an invitation to engage, to share, to be intimate and present – to be off-line.

Analog is not a square, not a circle, not an oval – it is a new form that takes the best from the three classic shapes and brings them together in a new, organic form. There is no hierarchy, just a beautiful platform for conversations which is a perfect match for modern relationships among family members, friends and colleagues.

“The table is an underrated piece of furniture. In my eyes, the table is the heart of the home, the heart of the office, the heart of the restaurant. At the table, we share our greatest joys and sorrows, and at the end of the day, some of the greatest things in life happens around a table. What makes Analog unique is its shape. It’s neither square, round nor oval but something in between, which supports dialogue and intimacy. I have worked a lot with the shape of the table and the way in which it is simultaneously heavy and light, so that it exudes quality and possesses that special Fritz Hansen DNA,” -Jaime Hayon.

FRAMES Collection for Expormim

The history of this third generation family firm created a challenge for Jaime to tell an old story in a new and interesting way. All of Expormim’s products have a strong identity and exude a flavour of the Mediterranean area they hail from, a characteristic they share with Hayon. For the FRAMES collection which includes an armchair, a screen and a side table, he has combined his respect and love for the Expormim traditions with his unique design sensibility to create clever pieces that take a new approach to the way in which the material is used. Rattan is almost unique as a furniture material in that it requires no additional components to function, taking this material, Hayon created a series of frames that come together offering comfort and flexibility.

FRAMES is a happy new chapter to an old story, the old tale of craft and tradition within a new framework of clever design using a joyous new approach to the material. The nested narrative of the design brings this traditional outdoor furniture inside, adding a layer of glamour to the rustic charm of the material. What was once only a seasonal story can now be told all year round, with this simple yet sophisticated, aesthetic FRAMES has all the properties of a contemporary classic.
